How to use the word density checker
- Paste your text into the box above — an article, blog post, essay or product description.
- Press Analyze text (results also update live as you type).
- Read the stats: total words, unique words, your most frequent word and its density.
- Scan the frequency table to spot words you repeat too often.
- Use Copy results to paste the table into a report or spreadsheet.
Tip: keep Ignore common stop words turned on so filler words like “the” and “and” do not hide the words that actually matter.
What is word density?
Word density is the percentage of times a particular word appears in a text. SEO writers and editors use it to check whether a keyword appears naturally — or is repeated so often that it looks like keyword stuffing.
word density = (word count / total words) x 100For example, if the word “garden” appears 12 times in a 600-word article, its density is (12 / 600) x 100 = 2%. This checker calculates the density of every word in your text at once, so you can see the full picture — not just the keywords you remembered to check.
What is a good word density for SEO?
There is no official ideal percentage. Most SEO guides suggest keeping a target keyword around 1% to 2% and writing naturally for readers first. Google has stated that keyword density is not a ranking factor, so readability matters far more than hitting a magic number.
As a rule of thumb used by editors:
- Under 3% — a natural distribution for most content.
- 3% to 5% — on the high side; consider varying your wording with synonyms.
- Over 5% — likely keyword stuffing; rewrite those sentences.
This tool flags your most frequent word automatically: green means natural, amber means worth a look, red means rewrite. If you want to track specific keywords instead, try our free Keyword Count Checker.

Frequently asked questions
What is word density?
Word density is the percentage of times a word appears in a text, calculated as (word count / total words) x 100. Writers use it to check whether a keyword appears naturally or is overused.
How do you calculate word density?
Divide the number of times the word appears by the total number of words, then multiply by 100. For example, 12 occurrences in 600 words gives a density of 2%. This tool does the math for every word automatically.
What is a good word density?
There is no official target. Most SEO guides recommend keeping a focus keyword around 1% to 2% and prioritizing natural, readable writing. Anything consistently above 3% deserves a second look.
Is word density a Google ranking factor?
No. Google’s John Mueller has repeatedly said the search team does not use keyword density as a ranking signal. Pages rank because they satisfy the search query, not because a keyword appears a set number of times.
What is keyword stuffing?
Keyword stuffing means repeating a keyword unnaturally often in an attempt to manipulate rankings. Densities above 3% to 5% for a single term often look stuffed, and this checker flags words above 5%.
Does this tool upload or store my text?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device and nothing is uploaded to a server.
How is this different from a keyword counter?
A keyword counter tracks the specific keywords you choose to check. This word density checker analyzes every word in your text and ranks them by frequency, so it also catches overused words you did not think to look for.
